The board of Osaze Ark Trust is currently sourcing funds to work on building a home for a children’s home in Kawangware Nairobi, Kenya.
The home was chosen because the over the years one of the partners has supported the organization in meeting part of their monthly expenses. It was some time last year when the children in the home were forcefully evicted out of the rental home they were living in due to inability to pay rent. The children slept out in the cold for some days before they were able to get alternative housing. The home has over one hundred children but only 26 of the children live in the home premises. The 26 include 18 girls and 8 boys who are in the home all year round.
DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES
Over the years, the founders of the organisation have visited various children’s homes in Kenya. Children homes in Kenya generally rely on donor funding to survive. Almost all children’s homes receive funding or donations for the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, security and education. All of which are relatively easy to provide apart from shelter.
Shelter on the other hand is a big challenge. The children’s homes proprietors often times resort to renting out properties which they can hardly afford due to the unpredictable nature of most donations. This is despite the fact that rent payments in a city such as Nairobi, Kenya have been on a steady increase in the last decade. The proprietors therefore live on a monthly basis hoping that the donations would cover their rent and as a result provide housing for the children. This is neither secure nor sustainable for the children.
It is on this basis that the Osaze Ark Trust was formed to source for funding for the provision of decent and sustainable housing for children’s homes in Kenya.
